Two Tips for Choosing a Dance Class

by Keith Gregory

If there are lots of different dance classes available in your area and you're not sure which one is right for you, here are some tips to follow.

Choose one based on the music you like to listen to

It's very important that you like the music to which you'll be dancing, so if you're torn between two kinds of dance classes, it might be best to go for the one that features the type of music you prefer to listen to. The reason for this is that one of the big sources of enjoyment that people usually experience at dance classes is connecting to and conveying the emotions of the music they're dancing to with their bodies. To experience this, you need to feel some connection to the music and to derive some pleasure from listening to it.

If, for example, you were to take ballet classes because you think the graceful movements that ballerinas do look beautiful, but you find classical music (which is the genre that features in most ballet classes and performances) very dull, then you probably won't like these classes very much, as you may not be able to understand the meaning behind specific pieces or you may find that they just don't make you feel anything other than bored. As such, the best way to ensure you really love going to these classes is to choose a type of dance that features the music you like the most.

Consider what you want to gain from the classes

When making this decision, you should also consider what it is that you'd like to gain from these classes, as this could help you to choose a specific class. For example, if you want to get a really good cardio workout during each class and leave it feeling exhausted but exhilarated, then something like hip-hop or breakdancing might be the right choice, as both involve fast-paced dancing that will get your heart rate up.

Conversely, if you're mostly interested in making friends, a dance class that involves partnering up (such as ballroom dancing or tango) would be a great choice, as being paired with others each week will make it easy for you to get to know your classmates. Finally, if your goal is to become strong and limber, ballet might be the best option, as the ballet moves you'll do will stretch and strengthen all of your muscles.
